Talk About Blyton!

Famous Five – Berta And George

June 8, 2009 – Kate says: In all of the other series, EB has said that George looked exactly like a boy and everyone mistook her for one. But when Berta came onto the scene and began to look like a boy, everyone said that she DIDN'T look like a boy and the kidnappers could tell she was a girl. Why is that?
June 10, 2009 – Josefine says: Kate, you remind me of something that I thinking about too when I read the books. It's the same thing in "five go to mystery moor". The girl Henrietta, she looks like a boy in a dress but George look fine in skirt. This scene is when they are going to eat the first time. That's a good question you have here!
June 12, 2009 – rogoz says: Everyone said Berta was a fine looking boy and a better one than Georgina [ Ch. 8 ] but the criminals saw Georgina differently in poor lighting: ‘This is the one!’ said a low voice. ‘The one with curly hair! And this is her dog, the poodle - -" so they just used the hair and the dog to identify her.
June 12, 2009 – rogoz says: I think Blyton meant that Georgina could look fine dressed as either sex. ' George looked nice, because her curly hair went with a skirt and blouse quite well, but Henry looked quite wrong, somehow, in her frilly dress."You look like a boy dressed up!’ said Anne, " '.
June 24, 2009 – Josefine says: But then I have a new question. How could a girl "look like a boy dressed up" only because of the hair? Henry/Henrietta was a girl so WHY did SHE look like a "boy dressed up"? I don't understand. Boy's and girl's aren't so equally. Am I wrong?
June 26, 2009 – rogoz says: I can only suggest that some girls of that age can easily pass off as Boys, because of things like their bone structure, build, manners, hair cut etc. You probably can think of girls you already know who might pass as Boys and some will pass much better than others. Blyton knew all this, because she modelled Georgina like herself - a bit of a tom-boy, and she often wrote of girls as tom-boys [ but there's no tom-girls; real boys weren't supposed to do things like that ].
January 22, 2011 – Aditi.varshini.chandra says: George is certainly fussy but better than Berta. I have seen the the movie Five have Plenty of Fun and Berta did not really look like a boy. Besides Berta was rude to George when she said ' Girls who dress up as boys are silly' I think Anne,Julian,Dick,Lesley,George and Joanna could have only telephoned the police because their telephone wires weren't cut.
Fatty says... Fatty says: Don't take the TV adaptations as Gospel!
February 3, 2011 – A Girl says: Whenever I am reading the FF books (not so much in other books), I always feel as if EB is sort of gay. I mean, she always talks about girls acting like boys and stuff, and it makes her a bit weird. Not that I don't like EB (I love her books, especially the Adventure series because it has less weird gender problems), but isn't she intensly mad about George, Henry, and Jo acting like a boy? I guess.
Bets says... Bets says: Not sure I see your point - many girls, even nowadays, are die-hard tomboys. That, however, doesn't make them gay.
February 24, 2011 – N1BF says: What happened was that the kidnappers must have been sharp, because the shop girl mentioned a girl who liked to dress like a boy (George), or something like that. The kidnappers jumped to conclusions that this was Berta. They took George instead, because she was out with Sally-dog. As for Henry, it was mentioned that George's curly hair was more girlish than Henry's straight hair.
July 30, 2013 – Izi says: I don't know but in the DVD I have the phone wires are cut!
April 15, 2024 – George and Timmy Kirrin says: Kate, I think compared to Henry or Berta George looks like a girl. Or maybe it's because George in her dressing gown didn't look like a girl. George was also holding Sally the poodle that's probably why.
