Talk About Blyton!

Unlisted - Enid Blyton in general – If Enid were alive today?

November 13, 2011 – Imogen says: If Enid were alive today - which is possible as the longest a human has lived is 122 - what would she think of the world? Would she and JK Rowling write a book together? Hermione Granger at Malory Towers is a fun thought!
December 14, 2011 – Aditya says: Ha-ha!
Bets says... Bets says: Might you add something else to this?
December 14, 2011 – Aditya says: Why not Darrell Rivers at Hogwarts!
Fatty says... Fatty says: What is it with this obsession with J K Rowling? There are many more children's authors out there, you know!
December 28, 2011 – Saky says: Maybe she would have written more books and perhaps another series or so, but for some reason I don't quite like the idea of bringing Blyton and Harry Potter together. Enid's tales are quite magical on their own, thank you very much!
Fatty says... Fatty says: I quite agree!
January 13, 2012 – Emma says: I agree J K Rowling is very good and I am a fan of the HP series, but I grew up reading The Famous Five, St Clare's, Malory Towers and the Chalet School by Elinor Brent-Dyer and these books were just as good back in the day. I am now in my late thirties and still think these books are excellent.
February 26, 2012 – Trevor says: Hello, I think on this subject that if Enid Blyton was still alive today, (she'd be approximately 115), that she would be too old and sick to write stories. She probably wouldn't even know what a book was if she reached that age. Although, years before (approximately 15 years+ before) she may have co-authored as you are suggesting and even added to her collections. Hopefully 'The Five Find-Outer's' would have a few more books to the series. Same as the 'Famous Five', the 'The Naughtiest Girl' etc.
June 5, 2012 – Jeni says: I agree with Saky (and our very own "Fatty"!!) - I wouldn't even mention Enid Blyton and Harry Potter in the same breath! Worlds apart! Nothing in common. Enid is in a class by herself and JK Rowling, is another story. One I don't care to comment on.
June 20, 2012 – Jeni says: If Enid were alive today, she would be shocked and saddened at the plight of many children today: Being murdered, abused, abandoned, and neglected by their own parents, and so many millions starving all over the world. No doubt she would have set up a charity to help as many children as she possibly could. At least that's the Enid I know. From reading her books, one gets a gist of her personality.
Fatty says... Fatty says: In 1950, Enid gave over the royalties of Before I Go to Sleep to the Shaftesbury Society Babies' Home in Beaconsfield. It amounted to several thousand pounds. She later became Chairman of the society. Enid was involved in various charities.
June 21, 2012 – Jeni says: Thanks, Fatty. I really need to brush up on Enid's "bio". There's quite a lot about her I don't know about. What an amazing human being she was!
Fatty says... Fatty says: The Society's Author of Adventure has all you need to know!
October 31, 2014 – Evie says: Hermione Granger at Malory Towers would ruin the whole thing. I don't know why people compare Blyton and Rowling, Enid is so much better!
February 21, 2016 – GRAHAM SMITH says: I WONDER IF ENID WAS WRITING NOW WHETHER SHE WOULD WRITE ABOUT THREE GOLLIWOGS?
Fatty says... Fatty says: No need to SHOUT, Graham! No, of course she wouldn't. Golliwogs were a toy, at the time of her writing, to be found in every child's toy cupboard/bedroom.
February 23, 2016 – Paul Austin says: Graham, the reason that many modern people recoil from golliwogs is that, visually, they are based on the blackface minstrel look. Britain was slow to get the message that blackface was unacceptable - as late as the seventies, you had Bill Oddie blacking up as a black Muslim in an episode of "The Goodies" where the boys find religion.
December 22, 2016 – Paul says: Trevor: dementia like Enid had isn't a natural part of aging, it's a disease like cancer or AIDS that we can one day defeat. There have been people who have lived past 100 and still been sharp mentally.
