Talk About Blyton!

Adventure Series – Favourite Character

May 1, 2008 – Jack says: Guys, which is your favourite character in this series ? (I was getting tired of only Famous Five comments in the section so I started a topic elsewhere) Mine is Jack and Philip both. I love Jack's caring attitude towards everybody and I like Philip and his strange attraction towards animals, his hot temper and his bravery. Both the boys are brave and excellent. Jack may be a dreamer, but he has an ambition and so has Philip. Both love nature's two best things - birds and animals. So they are my favourite characters. Tell me your opinions, I need to know them.
June 7, 2008 – Victor says: Being a guy, of course I most related to Jack and Philip. If I had to pick a favorite, it would have been Philip. Hard to say why - Jack seemed a shade more dominant and so as a younger brother, I would have related more to Philip - but I also liked his sense of responsibility to his mother. With his father dead, you can tell that he was fighting the urge to be a boy and at the same time be the man of the house. When Aunt Polly (rather unfairly, I think) dumps her money worries on him in Island, he is prepared to step up to the plate and do what he can. He's also a bit naughtier than Jack which I suppose I liked as well.
August 20, 2008 – akika says: My favourite is Dinah. I find Philip's ability to attract all animals extremely difficult to believe [though don't I wish I could] and Jack rather domineering. Lucy-Ann is lovely, but she annoys me. I find that Dinah, with her temper and inconsistent nature to be the most realistic character of the four. She reminds me of girls I knew when I was at school and a bit of myself when I was young. The way she fights with Philip is also much more realistic. A bunch of children who spend that much time together are likely to get on each other's nerves and fight. Yet that only ever happens between Philip and Dinah.
September 6, 2008 – Jack Trent says: I like everyone, though Jack 'drives me mad'. Dinah is the what you call the tomboyish catagory. Lucy-Ann, I like her but she hates Adventures which I scorn. Bill is wonderful and belongs to the high-ups. Philip, as Bill had said hard to believe but he has such a gift that I could not help envying at. So Phillip it is.
Fatty says... Fatty says: Hmm...Jack Trent thinks Philip is the best character....
September 12, 2008 – Jack Trent says: I don't understand it! Philip is always fawning over animals, yes even bears, snakes and monkeys. At least the animals are. What animal did he have in the Island of Advenure (sorry, I don't have that book yet).
Fatty says... Fatty says: Haven't you heard of Dr Doolittle, Jack? Don't understand your third sentence....?
February 6, 2009 – ruchi says: I was never too fond of animals myself so I dont like Philip that much and also I relate more to Dinah. I get very annoyed with Lucy-Ann and her constant whining. And why does she have to follow Jack around so much??? On the other hand, I quite like Jack too, and especially his parrot Kiki. Overall. It would have to be Jack since he seems to have the most amount of adventures.
February 18, 2009 – Tuba says: Dinah is the most realistic character but is not very helpful in adventures. Lucy Ann also takes a back seat and is too good. Jack though, I think, is a fair leader, but is not my favourite { I don't know why}. Philip, though a bit difficult to believe in is my favourite. Kiki is one of the best pets of EB and a very interesting character. Personally, I feel that after the Secret series, Adventure tops and the characters of these two series are the most interesting characters [along with Barney. Snubby and Georgina. The characters of these two series travel everywhere.
April 28, 2009 – Enid fan says: Dinah is one of my favorites - a realistic and strong female character. Sadly her role in these books is virtually non-existent. Her basic description though reminds me of Karen Allen's character in Raiders of the Lost Ark - sharp, feisty, and fun. Kiki is amusing, but completely unrealistic. I never heard of a real parrot that could almost carry out a conversation like Kiki can. Her intelligence is almost human and her repertoire of words and sounds is unbelievable. I used to think of Lucy-Ann practically as a piece of furniture or prop when I read these books as a child. Reading her as an adult, I appreciate her better. Now, she seems very realistically drawn. I can totally see that a eleven year old kid would be terrified of the situations she finds herself in, and that is just what she is. Both the boys are rather alpha-male, and see most of the action. I think Jack was one of my faves as a child - I adored him in Circus. Now however I wonder what sort of adult Bill is to allow unarmed under-age boys to accompany him in dealing with murderers and criminals who should really be dealt with by his colleagues on the police force. But I suppose all the fun of the books is in suspension of disbelief. :) Overall, I remain very fond of this series.
May 1, 2009 – Enid-Jo says: I like Dinah and Phillip with their little tufts of hair, and I also like Jack and Lucy-Ann with freckles. I liked how Jack called Phillip Tufty and how Phillip called Jack Freckles. It amazes me how unlike the 2 girls are! Dinah is bold and can stand on her own 2 feet, but Lucy-Ann is shy, hates adventures and always depends on Jack. Also it is a bit weird how different Dinah and Phillip are. Phillip loves animals and can get almost any animal to come to him, but Dinah detests animals! I don't understand how Jack puts up with Lucy-Ann following him round all the time! My overall favourite is none of them! It's Kiki!!! Jack's Parrot!
June 1, 2009 – meow says: Well, I do like Lucy-Ann but when she says I don't want adventure, it is a bit silly.
June 8, 2009 – Kate says: Jack - I've always loved him the most. None annoys me, though. I love them all but have a soft spot for Jack.
July 18, 2009 – cheese says: I personally like Philip because he is so brave and trustworthy. Also, he is a very responsible child. I don't exactly like his tempers, but he's all right.
August 8, 2009 – Ankur Acharya says: I like both Philip and Jack. Philip because of his love for and empathy with animals in general. His great talent of attracting any animal whatsoever to him, is really amazing and is also indicative of his spiritual maturity, I believe. As for Jack, he is caring, kind, mature for his age and while mad about birds is concerned very much about his orphaned sister too. I really admire these two characters of Enid Blyton in her Adventure series.
August 20, 2009 – Gaurav Pratap Singh says: It is very difficult to choose between Jack and Philips. Jack is more mature and does not lose his temper as easily as Philip. But then Philip has the magical quality of enchanting every wild animal. Jack appears to be the more determined of the two– it is his tenacity to follow his dreams and desires that pull them into adventures, as in the case of Island and Castle – to see the Great Awk and Eagles respectively. I also like the way he understands and talks to Kiki. He also comes across a caring brother in his relationship with Lucy Ann. So I will go for Jack. The descending order of my favorite characters is Jack followed by Philip, next comes Lucy Ann for her gentleness. Last comes Dinah, but only because the characters in this series are so interesting.
September 30, 2009 – Maitreya says: Philip is my favourite character in the whole series. What with his incredible attraction for animals, he can't be denied appreciation. He is Jack's foremost friend, and they two are often found bird-watching or talking. I almost fainted when I read how he tamed the ferocius bears in The Circus of Adventure. I wish I was like this.
October 2, 2009 – April June says: Philip is, I think, my favourite character in the entire series. His amazing talent of being able to attract even the most fierce creatures and his love for animals are the characteristics that make him stand out from the rest of the characters. I am a great lover of nature and animals, and I have experienced playing with animals before here in Canada, but I have never been able to attract wild, ferocious animals the way he does. However, Jack, Lucy-Ann, and Dinah are right behind him. They all have interesting personalities, and are quite realistic, especially Dinah. It was very hard for me to decide which character I like best, for I love them all, but I do find Philip the best.
January 8, 2010 – Jack Trent says: I don't even know why I'm saying it, you're too cute, Fatty (Cute=genius) to resist. Hat's off! I still like Phillip. And Lucy Ann is quite nice (though Bets is WAY better) I understand Dinah about bugs and spiders, but I don't SCREAM when I see one. PS - the Aeroplane of Adventure is COOL. Go to the top of the world!!!!
Fatty says... Fatty says: Not sure I like being thought of as cute! And I should hope you don't scream when you see a spider - that's what a girl would do!
April 24, 2012 – Liam Frazer says: Philip is my favourite character because of the way he is with animals and how he is an adventurous boy like me.
September 14, 2013 – Philip Ion says: I can identify quite well with Philip - and not just because we have the same name! I've always been fond of animals, though I'm a bit disappointed that he never seems to get friendly with any cats!
September 22, 2014 – evie says: Hi,I recently started reading the adventure books they are so good! I just wish there was a dog in it, I love them have a collie called Kenny. My favourite is Tufty (Philip) who is yours?
September 24, 2014 – Farwa says: I like them all so much that I can't choose one!
September 26, 2014 – Evie says: I LOVE Philip. I don't like his name so I always think of him as Tufty. My favourite was orignally Jack but now its Tufty. I keep trying to draw him but can't get the tuft right! So far I have only read the Circus, the Castle and the Valley. I wish Tufty could have a pet of his own instead of a different one each book, I never thought that was fair. GIVE TUFTY A DOG!!!!!!!!! I am writing my own Adventure book and in it Tufty gets a Border collie puppy, which he calls Buster. Why does Enid Blyton always think parrots say nursery rhymes? I know there was another parrot in one of her books that did that, I can't remember which one though.
Fatty says... Fatty says: Thankfully, the Adventure series is dog-free!
October 14, 2014 – Evie says: Hey, dogs rule! Don't you think Tufty should have a dog? Anyway, Fatty, you have one yourself, called Buster. I'm sure Buster is sulking with you now.
January 3, 2015 – Evie M says: Actually, I really like Dinah since she reminds me a lot of me and my brother: my mum says we would fight over fresh air if there was nothing else to fight about. And like Dinah/Jack, I don't worry about my brother since he can take care of himself. So Dinah and Philip I really like. Not too keen on Jack and Lucy- although I love Lucy-Ann's name!
May 25, 2015 – Nithya says: I loved reading the Adventure series. Me being a girl,I ought to be like Dinah! I can't say who's my favourite as all of them are. I just can't imagine how these four get into adventures! Are they based on real characters?? Still, I like the boys and Dinah. Lucy-Ann is good, but I think that she ought to be bold like Dinah. Kiki the parrot is so damn funny! I wish I had one.
Fatty says... Fatty says: All out of Enid's wonderful imagination, Nithya.
June 22, 2015 – jess says: I like all the Adventure series poeple, but Philip and Dinah are my most favourite. I like Philip becausw he loves animals like I do and I have a huge temper like them and having loads of siblings I quarrel alot with them to, so the book is realistic but I think Dinahs pretty silly, to be scared of spiders and things like that being described as a tom boy, a tomboy woudn't ever be scared of stuff like that. I like Jack after them because he loves animals to especially birds, and Kiki isn't a bit unrealistic because my aunts dad had a parrot like Kiki. And Lucy Anne she's such a baby. I would NOT ever be seen following my brothers everywere they go, we argue more to, and Jack ought to put Lucy Anne in her place. There, thats what I think about the adventure series kids.
Daisy says... Daisy says: And I think that I will not be putting up the rest of your postings, Jess, because you haven't taken care to spell, or punctuate properly. Names have a capital letter at all times!
June 26, 2015 – Evie M says: Oh, how could you say that about poor Lucy-Ann, she's my favourite character and always has been ; '( I also do not agree with what you say about tomboys can't be scared of spiders because I am a tomboy and am scared of spiders lol. And Diego the Saber Toothed Tiger from Ice Age is scared of water and he isn't silly.
July 4, 2015 – lily book fan says: I love the boys and also Lucy and Dinah me and my friend play adventure series by the way I am a tomboy and will stand no nonsense.
July 19, 2015 – jess says: Sorry, Daisy. I promise to do all my spellings this time! (You sound like my mom) Evie whats Ice Age?? Ok maybe tomboys can be scared of some things but I'm not. (See Daisy, I did all my spellings correctly) ; ).
Fatty says... Fatty says: Hmm, punctuation loses you points...
February 4, 2017 – AishS says: I like Jack and Kiki the best! Kiki is so funny and I like Jack because he is Kiki's owner. Kiki sounds very cute.
