Gilbert Dunlop Exhibition
I had a note from Deborah Phillips about an exhibition for illustrator Gilbert Dunlop running from October 27 through November 3rd in the Roseangle Gallery, Dundee (in Scotland). Gilbert was the main illustrator for the Barney Mystery series as well as a few standalone novels including The Boy Next Door (later edition) and The Mystery That Never Was.
Deborah says:
Gilbert, a friend of the family, was a lovely, lovely man and he gave me several copies of the Enid Blyton books he illustrated when I was wee. I don't know if there will be any "Blyton" illustrations on show or not but it will be an opportunity to buy some of his fabulous artwork. Hope this info is of interest to EnidBlyton.net members.
I'm a great fan of Gilbert Dunlop's work. In fact, since The Boy Next Door was the first "vintage Blyton hardback" I read, you might say Gilbert was instrumental in getting me started on a "proper" collection. Everyone has his or her own favorite illustrator and it's hard to explain exactly what appeals to me about Gilbert's work over others, but in any case this is an exhibition I'd love to go to if I weren't lost in these tunnels under the old castle.
For examples of his work, trawl through the Barney Mysteries; Gilbert illustrated all but the fifth book (Rat-a-Tat). And if you can make it to Dundee, see if you can get me some original artwork! If you buy it and send it to me, I'll... I'll... well, I'll be your best friend, honest.
