A whiff of adventure

It's the beginning of a new year and I had a pang of excitement the other day as I realized there's a chance — just a chance, mind — that I might be able to go to England in May after all, and therefore pop along to the Enid Blyton Day!

Let me backtrack a little. You see, it's expensive to fly across the Atlantic at the best of times, and right now the exchange rate is terrible. Well, terrible for those flying to England from the USA anyway. As Fatty can reel off portry without thinking, I can almost reel off the exchange rates since 1995, which was the year I met my wife and started all this to-ing and fro-ing. In 1995 it was around 1.5 dollars to the pound, and it stayed around that mark until 2001 when it dropped to 1.43. This was a nuisance because that was the year I moved across here; when you have a lot saved up from the sale of a house, and you convert all that to another currency... well, I think I "lost out" on about $6000 because of that slight difference in the exchange rate. Grr!

Anyway — as soon as I settled here in Georgia, the exchange rate decided to start an upwards path. It hovered around 1.63 for a few years, and then in 2004 jumped to 1.83 where again it hovered for the next few years. 2007 saw a monumental leap to 1.95+ and reached a full 2.0 at times — that's TWO dollars to the pound, folks.

In terms of spending money in England, that's a BIG difference. If we hired a car for three weeks, that could be something like GBP 350.00, which in 1995 would have cost $525 and today would cost nearly $700. Not to mention fuel, accommodation, and anything else we want to spend money on. And the plane tickets are the worst of the lot. Although we'd buy tickets at this end, airline companies conspire to make sure no one benefits one way or another — so the exchange rate really kicks you in the teeth before you've even left the country. It hurts to be an American (or U.S. resident in my case) traveling to England right now. But if you're living in England and want to travel to the USA, my advice is — don't waste any time, do it now! You'll be able to buy a tank of gas or stay a night in a motel for 15-20 quid.

So anyway, what with one thing or another, visiting good ol' Blighty in 2008 was looking a little doubtful, and we'd written it off. But I have a little, er, bonus on its way that should pay for the lot — assuming I make enough to cover the tax bill this year, otherwise that bonus will have to be used for that. Still, it's a good sign.

There's another hurdle though. My wife is finishing her school work in the first quarter of the year (she's in training to be a sonographer), and at the end of that, around April, she has to take two or three Very Important Exams to get her necessary qualifications. When she passes those, THEN we can discuss going to England. So, assuming she passes first time round and can forget about school once and for all, and assuming I can use that bonus in England instead of on taxes, then Enid Blyton Day 2008 here I come!

(For those who haven't heard of Enid Blyton Day, there's some info about it here.)

Bother those horrid exchange rates! I do so hope you can make it to the aerodrome in May, Keith old thing, your trunk packed with essentials like a torch, a length of rope, a spare jersey, a bar of rather squashy chocolate and a simply enormous bag of peppermint bull's-eyes. My daughter and I are going off adventuring in Twyford again this year, checking out the "queer goings-on" at Loddon Hall. Hope to see you there!

So long!

That's fantastic, Keith. Look forward to seeing you. I'm sure that Julian wouldn't have been put off by silly things like exchange rates and taxes!

Do make sure you get into the right plane, Keith. I've heard that guns are sometimes heard in America. If you do hear any shooting when you're on the airfield, keep your head down and hide in the back of the plane. As for exchange rates, that's nothing. It won't cost you much to find a nice warm cave to stay in. I've heard too that there's a very accommodating landlady in Dorset who would probably put you up in return for a week's hard labour!

It will be GREAT if you actually organize an Enid Blyton Day, Keith. I'm sure there are millions of Enid Blyton's fans who will attend to your EB Day. Think how heavy your pocket will be. :)

Heh. Anita, as long as I pack all that in my trunk I should be okay, cuz I was wondering what airport security would think about my having a length of rope tied around my waist. I'm not sure I've ever heard of that kind of incident in the news, but I'm pretty sure it would raise a few eyebrows! I still find it remarkable that Jack took Kiki with him on a commercial flight when they went on a cruise to the Caribbean...

Tony, you're right, Julian wouldn't have been put off by exchange rates and taxes -- but that's just because he was never interested in going abroad, and he was never quite old enough to deal with the Inland Revenue!

Nigel, I'm living in a cave at the moment (it's where I'm writing this blog from) but I was hoping for a change of scenery. But a nice grassy hill overlooking an airfield might be nice for setting up a tent -- or perhaps I could sneak into an old, tumbledown mansion...

And Mimsy... did you say "millions" of fans would attend?? Tony's been organizing Enid Blyton Day for quite a few years now and the numbers are more like a few hundred. And that's in England, the heart of Blyton. Heh, it's a nice idea, but I can't imagine ANYONE turning up to an Enid Blyton Day held in an old barn in Chickamauga, Georgia. A bunch of hillbillies, yes, fixin' to see what's a-goin' on... but Blytonites? Not a chance. Although, saying that, I'm aware of a very small number of Blytonites from these parts...

Hey Keith!

Checking out your blog to see if it's an interesting one to start following by RSS. And stumbling on this great news! Please do find the way out of that tunnel you seem to be in, and fly to England this coming May.

I am looking forward to meet you.
Greetings!

Well Keith, perhaps it will be millions if you organize Enid Blyton's Day around the world. You know, at the main countries of the world and don't forget Malaysia or I will be missed out. There is not much about Enid Blyton here in Malaysia, perhaps because of nobody that had actually made something about EB such as campaigns, camping, organization, society or anything.

Well, keep Malaysia in your mind if you actually want to organize "Enid Blyton's Day Around The World"...

Long Live Malaysia,
Mimsy
